What RSS Readers do You Use?

Just a quick post to try and find out what RSS readers people use - and how they rate them.

I currently use google reader for all my web based feeds (It's about the only thing I've found that seems usable for the number of feeds I (try!) to follow!

I need something else though particularly for internal RSS feeds. Internally we have a number of apps which provide an RSS feed - in particular Trac.

I need an app which which notifies me as soon as there are any new posts, and which will continue to highlight to me that I have unread items until I have read them.

I need an app that can run in the background all the time - preferably as a taskbar icon - basically like an IM client for RSS feeds.

It needs to be able to run on Windows XP (although I'm sure the 7% of you who are visiting using OSX will no doubt want to tell me how there is a much better solution on the Mac!)

Any recomendations?

Tony Fendall's Gravatar I use Desktop Sidebar for Windows XP (http://www.desktopsidebar.com). It's a really nice, unobtrusive way to keep your feeds always visible and ticking over

Terrence P Ryan's Gravatar I used to use Sharpreader. I recently switched to Feedreader.

It runs on Windows, allows for searches, and smart feeds, and categorized feeds.

Cutter's Gravatar I use the RSS reader that is built in to Thunderbird. Using it for years now, and it is outstanding.

Dan Lancelot's Gravatar Thanks for your responses.

I've downloaded Feedreader onto my main dev machine - it seems on the face of it to do a good job - I'll run with it a while to see how well it fits.

I'm going to download Desktop Sidebar as well for my other work machine - I have used this in the past - although I seem to remember I stopped using it at one stage beacause of resource issues (this was on a low specced machine a while back).

I have used thunderbird's RSS reader in the past - again, seemed to work ok - but as I am not using thunderbird on a day to day basis, I'd rather have a tool dedicated to the job...

I already use google reader - and will continue to do so for my public newsfeeds - however I need this tool for following internal feeds (primarily our Trac Ticket feeds, from an internal server) so a web based reader is not suitable for this task (+ the feeds would get drowned out by everything else I am already following with google reader!).

I'll let you know how it goes...

Markus Larsson's Gravatar I use FeedDemon and Newsgators service online. That means that I can read rss on my desktop and still access the same feeds from another computer when I need via newsgator.com.

I like not to have to reload a page or check a webpage to know that there are new posts, that's why I use FeedDemon.
